Ricky D, judging by your gearbox comment, I take it that around 100k miles means an almost certain gearbox issue ?

Thanks
Russell
The gearbox comment was in relation to one of the pictures showing the PRND432 illuminated red in the instrument cluster.

Is that a tell tale sign of a gearbox/f125 issue ? As there’s no ‘warning’ light on.

Apologies for all the questions, as you can guess I’m new to the D2 platform. Not new to Audi products though.
Thanks

PRND32 illuminated IS a warning, a severe one, gearbox in limp mode!
Which IIRC means locked in 3rd gear, which will drive surprisingly well.
Often due to a faulty F125, but can be something much worse.

1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Yeah that is the warning light. F125 is the best case scenario but even that's a £1000 job unless you can do it yourself. Don't assume anything unless you have a scan of the fault codes, preferably from VCDS.

Oddly enough, despite having pretended the F clutch had popped, Big Red is now fine after removing a gallon of water from the rain tray and drying out the electronics box No fault codes or PRNDS, just no drive then a big thump. Just Big Red, doing her usual D2 things

Wow, well thank you all so much for enlightening me to this.
I have a friend who has VagCom which should talk to whichever I car chose to look at.
Thank you all again for your friendly and helpful advice.

My old PF used to do that occasionally, but that was at least 15 years ago and I had no-one to help me understand it! I certainly wasn't online here.
