4 things I wish I'd known when I was looking.
Make sure all the instrument cluster lights work, especially ABS and Engine management. My abs light was "disabled" so it didn't show up an abs fault. I missed it. Slight water leaking at front end was oil cooler water leak. Cheap fix but a pita. Any creaking at the rear when going over bumps will probably mean a rear end re-bush. Parts are getting difficult to find. Check all electrics. Seats, windows, sunroof, heated seats etc.

As highlighted by Neil, with it not being a Final Edition, it should necessitate the seller reducing his expectations on price. It hasn't got the bi-xenon (xenon plus) headlights or the phone prep (no rear aerial on the wing) that's typical of a Final Edition, but it does have the solar roof that you don't find on an FE. The front grille badge is in the wrong place and looks like it's stuffed in at an angle. Maybe broken? The rear badge has too much of a distance between the S and the 8 in my opinion (how pedantic is that? ![]() And the stone-chipping at the front looks a little excessive for an 83k mile car so you'd need to factor the cost of that in to make it look pretty. No mention of a belt change in the advert. This could mean that you've got a grand to fork out for that (can cost more and less, depending on who is doing it - Audi quoted me £1400 two years ago). And then there's the usual checking for knocking from worn control arm bushes, does the aircon cool properly, oil leaks in the engine bay blah, blah. But the listing states "lots of history" so it suggests things have been taken care of when needed. When test-driving the car, check for any clunks in the gearbox when changing up and down. That gearbox service may have been done poorly or a long time ago. I test-drove a D2 once that had a noticeable thud/clunk when dropping down a gear (in automatic mode, not sports or a Tiptronic shift) at 30mph. Relative to Frank's car (spannerrash) that he advertised the other day on here for £6k, I think £7.5k is a tad too much. But in relation to others that I've seen for sale within the last year, it's certainly not taking the proverbial. Frank's car has rear heated seats, TPMS, bi-xenons and phone prep with similar mileage (although no blinds, or solar roof) and would certainly be on my list to check out (when he wants to put it back up for sale again in the near future). As a yardstick for pricing and what the "market" is willing to pay at the moment, you may want to see what this Final Edition went for in Newcastle recently with 113k miles. Here Anyway, good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks so much really useful information. I go and give it a proper once over and see where it sits. He said that the rear boot got sprayed last year due to a scratch now ready to leave. I already asked him about the timing belt and he said he hadn’t been done in his ownership so it’s old so I’ll factor that in and also a spray of a bonnet. It’s gotta be a grand too. I’m sitting in and around six grand for this car. I’m sitting in Kings Cross Station waiting for a train thinking I mad buying one of these

These cars are gorgeous, powerful, smooth and they do turn heads but you will pay plenty of ££££ for the privilege.

he did mention the cat has been removed years ago as it was rattling and the engine management system fault has been programmed out. im not sure if this will cause issues with MOT?

For me that would be a massive red flag. Am I wrong here or does no catts mean not legal? If that's the case then you will be at the mercy of a friendly and also corrupt Mot tester for the rest of your ownership.
It also stinks to me of shortcuts being taken. Mine was rattling when I bought the car, something else I missed during my test drive. I have had it replaced with a good used unit. Be very careful.

"The cat"? There are two....
Mine was rattling on one side when I bought car (replacement priced in) but it sailed through an MOT when properly warmed up. When I did get the failed cat replaced I was told that there was effectively nothing left inside it so the exchange process returned a metal pipe!
