They are automatic dimming mirrors and when the seal around the edges eventually bursts they go bronze and you can see the liquid inside.

Make sure none of the liquid goes onto your paintwork as it can make a right mess requiring a repaint

As I think I commented in another thread, both my cars (see below) have auto-dim interior mirrors (which I do find very useful) but not external and I've never had a problem with dazzle from the external mirrors. It's not an option I'd ever spend any money on.

Why "doh"?
The only ones I saw on eBay were from A8parts.
Personally I'd say buy the cheap £12.95 one and try it, you might like it.
If you don't like it buy a "proper" one and sell the cheap one - you might even get more than you paid!

I'm interested in which one it was you used, i'm looking to tidy up a few things on my car as i've only just got it and the previous owner had let things go - i'm in TLC mode at the mo

I've looked on ebay and post of the pics show one with a < shape in the inside edge, i tried in halfords and they incorrectly list the D2 mirrors as being for 2003+ onwards, however the D2 mirror was closer in shape that the pictures of the ebay ones ?????

Who? Me or Limoncello?

This is the nearside of the pair I bought. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150827821035

In retrospect they are "maybe" a tiny bit bluer then what I had before and the drivers side convex geometry "maybe" not quite as accurate, but not enough to concern me in the slightest.
