I had a genuine, swan necked, factory-fitted tow bar on my 2.8 A8 and the rear skirt did have a notch cut in it. IIRC, the genuine ones are Westfalia (?) and, if you check on the web, this model needs a notch to be cut if you have it fitted post-factory.

To be honest, this type was a real PITA! The 'spring-loading' mechanism stuck all the time, so you couldn't lock it properly. I had a really scary experience when my '8 and Davids8 trailer parted company. As I turned right into the dump, the trailer didn't, and it continued down the road alone.

I had to keep leaving it to soak in WD40 all the time to get it to lock properly.

Planned mods: auto-dimming rear view mirror, dash cam (as steamship's), fit the ski hatch, refit philips drl's (or maybe not - nope, definitely not - horrible botch!).
