They rely on little old ladies paying too much to tax their cars to pay for schools and hospitals and won't put the difference on income tax, which is what would need to happen. Politically adding more tax on fuel is suicidal as next to fags and booze it's about the most highly taxed product you can buy already
I don't think it's right to do away with the disc. I still see many vehicles driven without, which seemingly avoid detection. you just won't know who is potentially driving illegally
In other news a check for presence of a dpf on a modern diesel was announced yesterday - will come into force February next year
