I guess it depends what was in there last.

On a more "informative" note, examining what I have I've found a couple of little black rubber wedges with no obvious function.
They were actually parked under the two plastic retaining clips on the top edge - restricting movement, so would make it difficult to clip into place.
But they don't look like they belong there at all, there's no recess or similar to locate them precisely and it would be very un-Audi to have them floating around unrestrained.
Unless someone pushed them in at some point to reduce a rattle - Sean do you know what bits I mean? They would have made it more difficult to get the unit out.

They could almost be offcuts from something longer. About 2cm long - see picture:

I've discovered that the "elephant condom" which is actually fairly heavy, is easy to remove and replace - just a few clips to release a retaining plastic rim and it's out. It can be reinstalled from the boot side later if I want it.

The remaining unit is a lot lighter which will make installation easier.
I've had a bit of a "prod" from the cabin side and it feels as if all the relevant slots for mounting latches and catches are cut out, and the screw holes are clearly visible, so hopefully just a bit of metal snipping and cutting of covering material.

The trim-coloured covering flaps in the unit are also fairly easy to remove, they just clip in place, but can't be reinstalled after the frame is installed so I'll leave them in place.

Anyone got any thoughts on those rubber wedges?
This picture shows where they were (ignore the red arrow).
Under the plastic catch in the centre of the picture, you can just see the left edge of one. It was only loose, free to be pushed around.

HP, I had no wedges when I did my installation. But my part number started with 4D0...

Sorry, no idea. Never even noticed them when removing it.

The wedges do look unrelated. Part numbers quoted by Steamship are I think of one component, there are others (similar, moulded in) but no 4D0... label anywhere.

Just one question, as you've fitted it, how did the boot lining material fit around the hatch? Did it have a big hole and fit on AFTER the hatch, or a smaller hole with the hatch frame overlapping it?

It was smaller hole with hatch overlapping it. And those two metal brackets sit under the lining material of course.

I have cut hole in my existing lining. I have lining from PF car with OEM hole that was supplied with the kit which I used as stencil. Let me know if you need it and I'll mail it to you.

Are you serious about installing without removing rear seats? Yes, you can cut hole from inside the boot with a dremel tool with dremel cuttings disk attached to it. You can then carefully paint cut metal edges with touch up paint to prevent corrosion. You do that all laying in the boot?
