I've just booked a trip to Ireland (sadly not for this road trip). Thought I'd mention that today is the last day to get 25% off on Stena Line.

Default Mobile internet in Ireland

I've just been pondering internet access while we're Explora8ing....

It will be useful for all sorts of things, not least keeping track of bookings/reservations a few days ahead.

One option I've considered, to minimise data roaming charges, is a local SIM or one designed for data roaming.
In the latter category it looks like Three, with their "Feel at Home" offer might be a good deal. http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Phones/Feel_At_Home

I'm thinking of taking a spare phone with a £10 1-month mobile internet SIM in it.
See: http://store.three.co.uk/view/search...riff=204510100 (2GB) or the "Data Reward" SIM Pre-loaded with 1GB and valid up to 30 days.

Anyone have any other/better suggestions, especially the locals?

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I have a 3 mobile (LG G3), so will just use that as a mobile hotspot: no additional hardware, no additional cost

I'm probably the local-ist one doing the trip, but it never bothered me last year during the recce. I only used my mobile to TXT my brother, so he could keep my mum informed on how I was - she worries about me... still!

It's a holiday for me, so internet access goes by the wayside. I know there are a few members on here from Ireland, but can't remember who they are.

Just read the "Feel at Home" deal and it sounds very promising.

Stumbled across the following today. Now you know why people here have a hard time explaining where they live!

Ireland is an island to the west of Britain but Northern Ireland is just off the mainland - not the Irish mainland, the British mainland. The capital of Ireland is Dublin. It has a population of a million people, all of whom will be shopping in Newry this afternoon. They travel to Newry because it is in the North, which is not part of Ireland, but still pay in Euros. Under the Irish constitution, the North used to be in Ireland, but a successful 30-year campaign of violence for Irish unity ensured that it is now definitely in the UK. Had the campaign lasted any longer the North might now be in France. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. It has a population of half a million, half of whom own houses in Donegal. Donegal is in the north but not in the North. It is in the South. No, not the south, the South. There are two parliaments in Ireland. The Dublin parliament is called the Dáil, (pronounced "Doyle"), an Irish word meaning a place where banks receive taxpayers' money. The one in Belfast is called Stormont, an Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'placebo', or deliberately ineffective drug. Their respective jurisdictions are defined by the border, an imaginary line on the map to show fuel launderers where to dump their chemical waste and bi-products. Protestants are in favour of the border, which generates millions of pounds in smuggling for Catholics, who are totally opposed to it. Travel between the two states is complicated because Ireland is the only country in the world with two M1 motorways. The one in the North goes west to avoid the south and the one in the South goes north to avoid the price of drink! We have two types of democracy in Ireland. Dublin democracy works by holding a referendum and then allowing the government to judge the result. If the government thinks the result is wrong, the referendum is held again. Twice in recent years the government decided the people's choice was wrong and ordered a new referendum. Belfast democracy works differently. It has a parliament with no opposition, so the government is always right. This system generates envy in many world capitals, especially Dublin. Ireland has three economies - northern, southern and black. Only the black economy is in the black. The other two are in the red. All versions of the IRA claim to be the real IRA but only one of them is the Real IRA. The North's biggest industry is the production of IRAs. Consequently, we now have the Provisional, Continuity and Real IRA. The Real IRA is by far the most popular among young graffiti writers simply because it is the easiest to spell. I trust this clarifies things and has answered many previously unanswered questions for you.

Oh no, I think at one point we were going on the M1 and now I'm not sure if it is the M1 or the M1.

Sean, Hope that you do not mind but I have forwarded your explanation to some of my "very" old friends (True, I do have one or two, somewhere, probably all run away to Aussie land). I am sure that they will be much happier now that they now know what all the confusion is about.

Neil, That is how I feel when I do the Luton returns. Ten minutes after leaving M1 southbound I am usually back on it northbound.
