Side Airbags.... Boooom !
Ok, so as some of you may recall we were busily trying to move on a load of older and more tired seats to make space, and last week we came to the crunch of having to actually throw a rear seat back away....
Airbags are called as explosives, and the Law (and common sense really) dictates that we can't just throw explosives in a skip and leave some poor waste management guy to take the brunt of it, so all airbags must be detonated before disposal  So, we took a rear seat base, hooked up the connectors for the airbag feed, ran a decent length of cable to a +12 supply, shouted 'fire in the hole (for dramatic effect), braced and made the electrical connection. <bang> - Really, really loud bang. In fact, if the A8 I'm in ever had a side impace, and the windows were all firmly shut, I'm not convinced I'd be able to hear afterwards. It was really, really loud.... But, the second most cool thing was how little damage was done to the seat. There is a blatently weak stitch in the leather, so the airbag forces its way out through there and causes no actual damage. A simply restitch up and you're all good again. Well impressive. So, another top tip from A8parts. If you're going to get hit side on, open the windows first to let some of the explosive noise out  (Sorry there is no photo, but I will sort one next time!)
