Default Help needed please... (Ian?)

A bit stuck at the first hurdle, not sure if anyone other then Ian will be able to answer this...

Okay, I'm going to explain this the best way I can, I am stuck on the adaptor cables not being as plug and play as I first thought... One part of this plugs into the RNS E then the diversity fits into one of the old RNS D connections. Now where does the antenna go? There is no where for it to plug in?

My second question is, I have the GPS adaptor cable so I can use my exsisting RNS D GPS, when I have connected it up it doesn't find any satalites but used to find 8 or so with my old RNS D. When I plug an external GPS antenna it picks up 8 satalites straight away and locates my position.

Here is what the back of my RNS E looks like right now:

and this is what I am plugging into the back of the radio adaptor.

The picture below is what I am plugging into the GPS reciever adaptor

This is a picture of what cables I have left from the RNS D.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You in advance.

Have a root around inside the hole where your nav sits for the other aerial connector - The two you have there are correct, but you need the 3rd. The final one comes from the TMC module behind the cluster, and isnt part of the main audio loom so it tends to get lost easily, so have a fondle up that way

How long have you let the RNS-E look for satalites? - It should just work.....

Spot on Ian, that connector was wedged between the duct that takes the air con from the front to the rear vents, connected it up now and I have very clear radio.. So everything works now, even the satnav using the externaL GPS as well as the CD changer and the SD cards etc.... I have parked the car down the street and left the RNS E on now to see if it finds any GPS signal using its own GPS on the boot lid. I hope so, don't fancy an external aerial, although it does seem very good.. Tomorrow will be connecting canbus for info between speedo. Not looking forward to that, but looks doable thanks to Ians great writeup, thanks again buddy.

I think there may be a problem with the kufatec GPS adaptor, as even the external GPS adaptor doesn't work through it, I did however try to attach the RNS D gps aerial without the adaptor and that works, picks up 3/4 satalites although the external picks up 7/8. Either way I took the car for a spin and it doesn't move on the map. After a lot head scratching I think it may be because I cut the gala wire on my old RNS D (for tv in motion) so the RNS E currently thinks the car isn't moving. So now I'm going to join the gala wire together if I can find some solder. Could this be the case?

Er, no..... not really.

The gala only comes into play when you are moving, it wont stop you getting a GPS fix initially. You will however have to repair the wire before the RNS-E will work properly because it will use that gala feed for the speed input, Kufantec make the assumption that the gala is there and they feed that into the speed input for the RNS-E....

Strictly speaking, the speed input should come directly off the ABS sensors, as it does on the RNS-D on the 26 pin multiway connector, but the Gala feed works well enough most people would never notice any difference.

So, back to your problem - Sounds like you either have a dodgy aerial adapted from Kufantec, or a dodgy aerial port on the navigation unit?

Apparently the blue fakra connectors are quite fragile - It might be worth taking it out, and checking to make sure the contacts are still good and firm?

Does it work with a regular aerial directly into the RNS-E without the adapter or dont you have an RNS-E aerial with your kit ?

I'm not really getting how you connected up the RNS-D without the adapter - Did you just hold it there or something ?

Thanks for your input again Ian, I don't think I made myself clear on my previous post.
I did get an external fakra aerial with my RNS E, once I hook that up I get 8 or so satellites instantly, when I connect the external aerial using the kufatec adaptor it doesn't work which leads me to believe that there could be a problem with the adaptor. The only reason I decided to test the GPS adaptor by using the external GPS unit was that my car did not find any satellites using its own GPS through the adaptor.

However, my car manages to find 3/4 satellites if I connect it to its own GPS without the adaptor, it just slots in.. I haven't pushed it in to hard or forced it in anyway but it does stay.

So the car picks up my position initially, when I drive the arrow doesn't move. If however, I disconnect whichever aerial I am using and then reconnect it, it will find me more or less instantly even though I am a few streets away.

Thats what lead me to believe the car didn't think I was moving because of the gala signal...?

Got the can all wired up and now the RNS E lights up when I turn the lights on and switches off when I take the key out of the ignition etc...

So now to VAG COM code it, I have a VAG COM. Just don't know what values to set it at. Radio, CD Changer, SD function, TMC is working.

Thanks Ian, that Can wiring was genius. Made it very simple.

So I'm done, a fully working RNS E. How stunning does this look.

Thank You Ian and if anyone around the midlands needs any help fitting, I am fairly confident in installing this now and can help out if you like

Edit: I got the nav working by connecting the gala wire that I had disconnected for TV in motion to work on the D unit. With this disconnected the car icon wouldn't move no matter how far off my street I drove.

Nice one Amar - looks sweet

Just a couple of questions...does this work with your existing tv tuner so you can still watch tv?

How have you managed to connect the iphone and reversing camera?

Thanks,

Oli
