Default Black Front Grill

A Couple of you have commented on the new grill so I thought I'd just put up a quick how-to.

The whole grill has not been blacked out, just the bright work.

The grill is held in by three cross head screws. Once remove there are some trim packing pieces on the opposite side that may fall out. Just watch out they don't fall into the engine bay.

This is a grill I am in the process of doing a mod on but it shows the components on the back.

When you look at the back of the 4 rings and chrome surround you'll see how they're fitted. Two pairs of hands are a considerable help. On the chrome surrond the tabs on the end are very fragile, be careful.

Once off. I used 400 W&D dry to prep the surfaces and gave it a good keying. Once every corner is done I got out the aerosols and went to work.

Starting with plastic primer, a couple of dabs of stopper and a coat or three of primer filler. then the satin black. Finally I added several coats of satin laquer to give the surface a bit of resiliance.

Top tip - put your paint tins into some warm water for a few minutes before spraying. Really helps the atomisation.

Love it mike! Would be awesome to do the entire lower end of the car in that i.e. lower front and rear bumpers and the sills!...

what are your next plans for your car?

Oli,

I've already done the rear lower bumper in the satin black, but no satin clear coat. The front is to be done as is the aluminium trim on either side as it is all milky and the only way to get it shiny is to machine polish it. That only lasts a couple of weeks. I could lacquer it but then if it fails I'm stuffed. So satin black it is. Hadn't thought of the sills, will do them to.

Just done my grill like this.. in a more matt finish plasticote type spray (will post some pics when I can). Very happy.
Other than dropping a bloody grill retaining screw .. and I still have an undertray so hoping its rolling about on there.. !
