Default Horrible Noise (not the wife!!)

Morning chaps.

Got into the car this morning to go to work and a horrible droning noise is coming from the engine bay - as you increase the revs, so does the noise....

Reminds me of a possible belt problem, but only had these replaced a month back at Ben's place (rang Ben this morning, but was told he is up to his neck and to ring back after 4:30).

Any pointers - if serious, might have to use a local garage to fix as won't be able to get it to Ben's

Get your head under the bonnet and try and localise the noise.

Have you had the waterpump changed?

My other thought is AC Fan. Switch to econ mode and start the car. No drone then it's the AC fan.

Finnaly alternator bearing is a possiblity.

Hi mate!

Sorry difficult to get thru at min - up to my eye balls in engines!
If it is the A/C fan it would not speed up with the engine.
Just have a listen as to where it sounds like it's coming from and feel free to call bud. My mobile is 07748 638 411

Hi Ben, will have a listen later on to see if I can localise it!

Cheers

As you look at the front of the car, coming from the lower right - noticed when turning the steering, the noise changes - so my guess is the steering pump!!

Video so you can hear the noise:

Cheers

Just spoke to Ben and it is the PAS - the fluid is just below minimum so should be a quick fix tomorrow

Many thanks Ben and sorry for ringing you at home

Cheers

Check the filter in the PAS reservoir while you're at it.. I had some noises from mine and cleaning the filter (which was pretty filthy!) made it go away

Well, after 3 weeks of not being able to drive the car (having to rely on lifts to work or use the wifes Focus), I finally have my A8 back (minus over £400), but it was soo nice to get back behind the wheel
