Good idea, but they are all pre facelift AEW's.... (235BHP)
You're looking for AQG from a facelift car with VIN ending in > 3000, 265 BHP, 40 valve. I suspect the cost of the engine, plus freight would come to a similar price for the part brand new from Audi, without any of the guarantees...

Hi guys!
Again thanks for the numerous PMs and messages on this thread that you've sent and for your sympathy with it all. Ian's got it pretty much spot on in terms of the maths on costs. The only way this could potentially still be saved is if i find the right cylinder head for a couple of hundred quid...but still there are no guarantees as they can't see if anything else caused it in the first place without having a head to test the engine with so it's still quite risky....not to mention a gearbox with 170k miles and so forth. Going back to parts again...(please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong about any of the techy stuff below): I'm after part number 077103266MX and was found on some (but not all) AQG engines. THis is what Mastertechs told me atleast but the part was found on A8s with the following chassis details example chassis number: WAUZZZ4DZXN007482 The number after the 'X' should be greater than 009000 or any 8s with a 'Y' chassis.. I've been looking at various options. I think that unless a replacement is found, that's the end of my current 8 as much as it hurts. I've had a couple of grand in the bank which was meant for redoing the bathroom but given the choice i'd rather spend it on another 8 really. The only choice for me would be a nicely equipped FL 4.2 QS or a FL S8 I'm going to give Ian a ring about the silver 8 he's got on monday. I've also been toying with the idea of an S8....(yes mike,...i know you mentioned it before, i could well have my name on one) and have been looking on autotrader and eBay. My first impression after having searched around a bit is 'where the hell have all the S8 and 4.2 A8s gone???? - there seem so few around. There is one that i quite liked the look of (but would aim to haggle it down) and it's this one. It is still for sale, has full audi service history (ok it probably means no gearbox service but i would get that done ASAP), it has the same colour interior as my current one (and so a possible adding of i.e. sunblinds (which it lacks) could easily be done, and it's based near birmingham. If i get a chance, i may go and see it on saturday...by train Oh dear...what a drama all-in-all. I can't wait to be back on the road with an 8 soon. IF you know of any nice FL A8s or S8s around £5k or where you think it's close to that and worth a look - please feel free to post  Cheers, Oli

The VIN means not a lot to most people, so lets drop the non-significant digits and the remains are treated in a purely sequential alphanumerical fashion, so the significant parts of that example VIN are 4D-X-009001 where 4D is the body (Audi A8) and dashes can be ignored. The rest, X-009001 is essentially what we are interested in. The 'X' incremenrs alphanumerically, so Y, Z, 1, 2,3 etc with each being newer than the last. The last 6 digits are a simple sequence. The theory says that at that particular VIN, the design of the 3.7 AQF was changed, and thus parts from before, and parts after wouldn't interchange, which is where we thought we were at. Now, This is all fine if our donor car has a VIN lower than 4D-X-009000, but it doesn't. It was WAUZZZ4DZYN002193, or 4D-Y-002193 in 'significant' terms. This suggests that the donor head would be the same as Olis, which it obviously wasn't  Being the 'electronics' guy in a8parts, not liking oil much, I'd based my findings about incompatiblity on the engine ECU change at VIN 4D-Y-003000 which does correlate with the idea that the head we supplied would be different from Oli's own which is in the region of '4D-Y-009500' So, Oli is definitely on the newer ECU, and newer heads. According to the records, our car should have the newer head, but older ECU I am, quite honestly baffled now. I had logically assumed the engine ECU change was to do with the engine redesign and the new exhaust gas recirculation feature, which is the cause of the all problems. Now, I fail to see why the head design changed at one point, and the ECU changed later on.... And in any case, why is our engine different to Olis !! I concur with your part number, but dont understand why we dont have the right one...... Yours confusedly....

If you do get stuck with immobiliser reset etc. I can help you out there
 Hope you get it sorted one way or another Oli. I would upgrade to a D3 now Wink wink.....! (Mine's for sale....) What doesn't fit the physical head onto the engine or cams??? Are the water and oil paths completely different? What is wrong with the older head? Is the casting completely destroyed or? Pics would help.

Hi guys,
Just a quick update in that I have decided to write off my 3.7QS. There are 2 good things though.... 1. my 3.7 QS is staying in 'the family' and going to A8 parts - may you (and others) enjoy all the parts from it for a long time to come 2. I'm still in the A8 family  and will soon collect a 4.2Q FL that has belonged to A8 parts for a while.I won't have it for another 2 weeks but rest assured it will have some interesting goodies on it which i'll share with you when I get it. Thanks again for all the messages and for keeping a lookout for solutions/other 8s for sale. In the end the risk was just too big and the car had done a few too many miles to justify a £3k bill with a possible gearbox overhaul to boot. The garage (Mastertechs) in SW london were really good about it and charged me £560 in the end which i thought was more than fair considering they spent quite a bit of time on it. I would quite happily go there for a service. Glad to still be in the 8 family and looking forward to changing my avatar to my new motor now -Oli RIP V835 FNA

Well, we picked her up yesterday. Its quite sad picking up a motor that we know so well, its less than 4 months since we had it all apart fitting Bose, blinds etc.....
What a weird journey... We set off in Ice in Yorkshire, and by the time we were in South London I was cursing the blazing sunshine and lack of A/C... And today in Yorkshire, we're snowing again.... I'm a bit of a photo-aholic, so heres a shot of her at Toddington services on the M1 Northbound, finally out of the smoggy city for good  I dont think we've ever picked up a car that looks this clean......

Oh dear - what a sad end - but what can you do?
 I've made myself feel better by ordering a whole boat-load of new detailing stuff to make the new one gleam like it's never gleamed before. All i can say is that i'm sad to see her go but the 4.2 is going to be a step up in almost all areas so can't wait!
