Default How to install late FL ABS sensors to early FL (or PF)

Hi,

So as promised a little how-to on how to install late FL 4-pin abs sensors to a PF or early FL 8 (which uses a 2-pin system). This is most likely only useful to anyone that changed their hub carriers to FL versions like i did.

The end result of this procedure means that we have working ABS and traction control again.

First off a quick reminder of the differences:



A close up of the connectors...my car was an early FL and so set up with the 2-pin wiring.



Simply cut off the 4-pin connector, take the yellow and red wires needed for the ABS sensors and solder these to your trusty old 2 pin connector from your old sensors. Make sure you insulate it properly, leave plenty of slack on the cable and hey presto - bob's your teapot!



Take it for a thorough test drive and really test it!

PS - Please don't take this procedure as being endorsed by Audi. I wrote this in order to share the learning but do not recommend anyone else doing this...in other words...don't sue me!

Nice upgrade!

I have a question.

Are the larger D3 S8 rotors on the same plane as the D2 rotors? (Do they sit out or in more?)

Also how thick are they?

My thought is to use the D3 S8 rotors, since they are quite a bit larger, and either re-locate the D2 S8 caliper out on a bracket to the right diameter postion, but if the rotor is too thick that would not work. (Unless of course you take apart the calipers and add spacers to them, longer cross over tube for the brake fluid to make them wider...)

Just the larger rotors add more braking ability, since you are further out from the center of rotation. (Sort of like adding a cheater bar on a wrench, it multiplies the tourqe, so the same amount of pressure on the pads via the calipers equals more stopping force is what I've been told.)

The larger swept area just allows it to reject heat faster, or store more heat when used, and reject it over more time. (Reducing fade effects.)

So, in theory, just going to larger rotors would add to the braking ability of any vehicle, and the S8 Brembo's are pretty good calipers to start with, they just should have been mounted over larger/thicker rotors.

Assuming you have the correct hubs (you probably do), then you shuold be able to drop a set of D3 brakes on, anything from the standard up to the S8 Ceramics. Though you might also want to keep an eye out for RS6 brakes too as they'll just drop on as well I'm sure.

Hi guys, i have "found" bolt on solution for A8 D2
aluminium hubs with HP2 front brakes to 360mm discs & dual calliper upgrade from A8 D3 4.2 Tdi or Phaeton MK1 3.0 tdi model. Bolt on solution no spacers, adapters or so.
Today i did not take pictures when i was test fitting on spare hub, because i have literally one pile of 200 different discs and other pile of callipers to find bolt on match, But i will take some photos when install them on my car.
Minimum is 18" wheel, but im not shore wich wheel ET fit.
I knew they fit under my 19" 8.5j ET 45 oem D3 wheels. I will try to measure gap after fitment.

I have put some D3 310mm discs rear and adapters to fit calipers carriers on desired position. Will make thread for them too.

The D3 front brake geometry is the same as the D2 so all the options bolt up to both FL aluminium and steel uprights



This is the 360mm setup. The caliper for the 385mm from the D3 S8 and W12 is also a bolt-on fit, but the discs are stupidly heavy when you go that large. I think the 360mm is a good compromise between braking and unsprung weight. The ceramics would fit too, if anyone was brave enough!

Yes i have find 385s and really heavyer than 360s. Not much difference in diameter for some diference in weight
And found ceramics to but not find callipers for them.
I have steel uprights on my W12 and those poore single piston callipers, that engine really molest them but i did not look for upgrade on steel. Those brakes on my 2.5 tdi are joke for that car, and for what i have used when brake to stop, not to have just wish to stop car.
