Default Rear Light Cluster LED Mod

Having tinted them I thought I would move on to the next level and have a look at opening them up to have a peek inside and see what's possible with an LED mod.
So with dremel in hand........

I originally tried to heat the joint and soften the glue. however, it also softend the plastic and deformed it a bit. So I switched to the dremel. That also generated heat which has discoloured the plastic. If I do this mod for real I will probably use a junior hacksaw blade to minimise damage on opening.

I have a few dozen cheap LEDs to mock up the final array. I'm thinking of making the whole of each side being capable of being rear lights, brake lights and fog lights by having increasing intensity LEDs for each function. With the lenses now a uniform red I will use green LEDs for the indicators.

Red lines are rear side lights. Green for indicators and White for higher intensity lights, Brake and Fog. Lights would increase in intensity so that Fogs would be brighter than side and brakes brighter again.
Don't expect a quick result on this as it is a side line to some other work I have ongoing. But I'll update as and when.

Might want to check the legal implications for running this on the road. I know a while back I came across this and the situation was LED lights are not legal.
.. let me clarify that as I am sure everyone knows some new cars and bikes have them..
what the law used to say was LED lights are legal under european law for new manufacturers - i.e. can be fitted to NEW Cars on manufacturer complying to this that and the other, and then used in any euro country - but they aren't legal under UK law (confused!?) - and basically meant you cannot retro-fit them to existing vehicles in the UK.
Since the police will stop you for a number plate not printed how they like them, or for other mods to cars deemed not legal for the road, might want to check this out to save some grief if they make it onto your road motors..
