Well it's been a while but the time has come to do a service on the 8.
Tools needed:
- 32mm socket 1/2" drive i.e. like
this one
- 1/2" ratchet
- Long philips head screw driver
- Oil extractor
- Oil draining receptacle (i have two 6 litre jerry oil pans)
- Gloves
- Paper towel
Parts bought and used:
- 10 litres of Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 ECT (designed specifically for vehicles with DPF to help keep them clean)
- Oil filter
- Pollen filter
- Air filters x2
- Front wiper blades
All service parts bought from TPS (and OEM of course).
The amazing thing about servicing the TDI, the oil filter is on top of V8 block right in the middle and so very easily accessible.
She should be good for another 12 months...

Take off plastics around pollen filter and turn 4 screws 90 degrees to take the filter out:

On to the air filters - use a long philips head screwdriver to undo the 2 airboxes either side of the engine, take out the filter and refit the new one.
Refit with new filter and screw air filter boxes back on:
On to the oil change - first take off the engine cover and oil cap.
Then unscrew the oil filter housing using the 32mm socket and replace the filter with a new one.
Put extractor tube into the oil dipstick and pump out the oil. The capacity of the 4.2 TDI is 9.5 litres including the oil filter.
Then refill with new oil until it is just below the 'maximum' mark on the dipstick.
Lastly, replace wiper blades and go enjoy a spirited drive!
