Default Replaced my rear brakes today

Hi,

Just thought i'd show off the labour of a days work...

I found some OEM discs and later also found OEM pads for the rear (£60 incl postage altogether - not bad i thought).

Have been waiting for the weather gods, time and stars to align so i could get going on this and today seemed as good a day as any.

I did have a real headache with pushing the piston back in as i didn't realise that it isn't like the front ones (which i was able to just push) and you have to push and screw it back in...i was just pushing like mad for about 2 hrs...even went out to buy a bigger C-clamp and as you can imagine, no luck.

I ended up taking the whole caliper off, taking it all apart and then screwing it back in after i saw my error in technique...

At this point i had lost a lot of brake fluid so ended up buying more of that, only to find out i had an air leak so had to bleed the brakes.

So all in all, changing discs, pads, taking apart and putting back together a caliper, filling brake fluid and bleeding the whole system took me the best part of 5 hrs.

Very educational experience but i'm spent!

So if i could share one tip it would be (a) read the instructions properly and (b) make sure you know how to screw the rear piston back in.

Good thing is the brakes really do brake a lot better now so very pleased

Oli

This is what i started with on the OSR...

After taking the disc and pads off, i started putting the new stuff on...and it didn't fit with new pads as it was quite a bit thicker...

So off came the caliper...

After that, it fit and the OSR was done...after nearly 3 hours of being a PITA...

NSR took about 15 mins...

and after bleeding it twice, all done

The worst thing of it was that i did but on my mobile and somehow missed that step...i paid for that dearly!

At least it's all sorted and i'm much wiser about how our rear calipers are made up and how to fix it.

The wind-back tool is about £15 quid from a motor factor or even Halfrauds.

Used it on fronts too, it's awesome, saves sooo much time. Did both my rears with it on the D2 in under an hour from starting to get the tools out to putting them away.

The wind back tool makes an easy job of it, I dunno how you managed without. Well Done though, and on sourcing OEM discs and pads at a good price.

You're lucky that the rear calipers were OK Oli - what sort of mileage?
I was told they can often get a bit ropey at 100k plus and was all ready to change mine for new ones when I did mine - but whoever owned the car in the past changed the calipers but not the disks at the same time. It seemed a bit daft when you compare the price of a set of rear calipers to the price of 2 rear discs which from memory weren't too bad!
