Default Hydraulic Noise

Whilst stationary, engine running and foot on brake, does anyone else experience the sound of fluid being pumped around the gearbox? It differs slightly between gears selected but it's always there.

Just wondering if some hydraulic noise is normal?

Are you sure it's the gearbox, not the cooling system and especially the auxiliary coolant pump? (easily disconnected to test - or press Rest with the engine off)
If gearbox, could be low fluid.

It is definitely the 'box as the noise becomes slightly more prominent when shifting through certain gears. Maybe I'm making it sound worse than it is, it's only slightly audible. I can only describe it as hydraulic noise.

I take it by your response that your 'box is silent?

How is the box behaving now? Is it still going into limp mode?

As The Laird says, no gearbox fluid sounds should be heard - given you're getting gremlins post a DIY ATF change, I'd get it checked by a specialist to avoid any damage. The last thing you want is to drive it around knowing it isn't sounding/performing as it should.

Fluid level is correct. Checked twice. It drives the same and makes the same noises as it did before the service. It's only gone into limp mode once. I originally thought the slightly harsh shifting and the hydraulic noise was due to a partially blocked filter but evidently that wasn't the case as it is exactly the same and the fluid and the filter that came out was pretty clean.

It only makes the noise when the box is up to operating temperature and not when cold. I'll probably take it to a transmission specialist to see if they can diagnose the problem. It may be to do with the valve body and if so will be fixable without removing the transmission itself.

On the flip side it may go on like this for 1000's of miles. Would be nice to get a positive diagnosis though.

To be honest I like the fact that the car is an on-going project. Working on it is the only way you can really get to know it. Next things to do are change the torque support mount, sort the headlamp washer system and fit an exhaust system. I'm especially looking forward to the last one!

Mine made a 'fluid' noise after having a gearbox service at Audi Glasgow.

They'd under filled it by a gallon.

Search for a thread called 'funny noise' if you like for the full story....

Mental! I can't believe that Audi can make such fundamental errors. I have however got to the bottom of the issue. It certainly took me a while to work it out. I shall post my findings in a new thread.

Did you post the findings?
