Default Looking for Temporary Car Insurance

Wondering if anyone can provide me with names of insurance companies that do temporary insurance. After being off the road for a year, I've finally got my A4 2.5 TDI QS running again, and now need to sell it. I'm planning on getting it unSORNed, MOTed and taxed as a purchase incentive.

My current insurer (here in Northern Ireland) doesn't do multi-car policies and the site he suggested (tempcover.com) would only give me 1-day cover. If all else fails, I may just have to take out a new policy, and then cancel it when I sell the car (which would hopefully be sooner than later).

Not sure exactly what you mean by multi-car policies but when I had an "overlap" on my S8's I took out a cancellable short-term policy (max 90 days I think) with my normal insurer on the extra vehicle. Something they're totally used to doing.

Rates were reasonable (sort of a basic admin charge plus a daily rate which depended on the period required) and I cancelled it as soon as it was sold, getting a partial refund.

You do need to be insured to DRIVE to an MOT, but not taxed (unless NI is different) provided it's pre-booked.

I did a month with Admiral when I bought my current car while I sold the old one.

This might be a bit lateral and inappropriate (and I've just woken up…) but do you need to have both the A4 and A8 with concurrent active policies? If you can live without driving the 8 whilst selling the 4, you could transfer your policy to the 4 temporarily, assuming you can put the 8 somewhere safe for the duration of that transfer..

Problem is then you'll have to declare the 8 SORN as you cannot now legally own a taxed but uninsured car. Well you can but you'll get a fine from the DVLA.

Why is that a problem? If it's not insured it can't be used (or even parked) on a public road.
Bit of admin and a possible tax refund.

Never thought of that. Had just thought of insuring it long enough to get it MOTed and taxed. However, not so sure after reading what mannyo had to say:

I wonder if the insurance companies are aware of this, as it was never mentioned when I transferred the insurance from the A4 to the A8 when the A4 died on me last year.

Going to call Admiral in the morning to see what they can come up with for a quote for the two cars, or even if they can get anywhere near my current one.

My renewal note from current insurer 2 weeks ago was for £368. Called them and asked about discount for having a dashcam and now have a quote for £330. Out of curiosity, I called Post Office car insurance today, and the best they could do was £1,400.

I wasn't aware of it earlier in the year when I bought my S8 and swapped my insurance over to it from the A8. I'd just taxed the A8 for six months and thought it ideal as a selling point as it was MOT'd for a further six months as well. My thinking was it's taxed and MOT'd and therefore legal, ideal for someone to drive away, and was locked away till that day arrived.

I got a letter though a few weeks later stating it wasn't insured and if I didn't either insure it or SORN it I'd be fined. I phoned and asked if there was a period of grace due to me trying to sell it and was told no, it takes immediate effect once it's uninsured. All news to me at the time but if you've never been in the situation then I suppose you wouldn't be aware of it, just like I wasn't.

I decided to declare SORN on the A8 and got a refund on the remaining road tax pretty quickly.

Exactly my thinking, rather than trying to sell a car that first needs a MOT and tax.
