BUT, since this effectively resolves a lot of the issues that have been holding Bitcoin back, prices are likely to continue to rise following this. Just to clarify the 'hard fork' situation: If a hard fork occurs and you have the private keys to your funds, you will own the same amount of Bitcoin on both blockchains. If the private key to your funds belongs to an exchange, the exchange will be in control of the outcome.
