I tend to use the rear one too. If I recall correctly, the rear one is switched on/off by the red button in the driver's door (the one that also enables/disables the rear window buttons).
If the TomTom power cable won't reach, you could probably buy a longer one or a simple extension like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Car-C...w/162020896749

Wow, I knew something about 8s that you didn't know! That's gotta be a first (and probably last)
 Actually, the button is black (I was thinking of the memory seat on/off button) but it definitely turns the socket on/off. I know this because I have my Steelmate TPMS Bluetooth receiver plugged into the rear socket most of the time, which illuminates when it gets power. Interestingly, that socket also powers up when you unlock the doors, presumably linked to the interior lighting.

Well I never, just tested it.
 Never have kids in the back so don't use the window inhibit button, but see the logic on safety.

DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant. 2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!  Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

First of all thanks for all your help and thoughts! really good stuff!
Guys the front one is working perfectly again i got a double adapter for it and it lights up with a power light, so i know if the socket is working seems all good and is a nice snug fit has x2 ports However! the rear one is not working! any ideas???  I replaced the rear one myself (oh knows!) with a prefacelift one in the same lovely shade of beige WJ, when i bought the car as a previous passenger kicked off one of the air vent selectors bits of plastic foolishly i have thrown the old one away thinking job done, i bet it still worked!, but never thought to test the new one really mainly cosmetic reasons, the red ring lights up but no power coming from it, have i got something wrong with the cable possibly? is it dead, is it possible to swap just the power bit out with another one if i can find one on ebay? our sponsors? if i can't find the same colour, tested with engine on so its not switched off
