Audi West London made a cacophony of errors when my car went there. It lead to a lot of stress for me and LONG periods without my car.

In the end, they stepped up and fixed/refunded all of it, so I now look back at their efforts and I can't say they weren't fair.

My sons S4 is allegedly coming back to him tomorrow morning (Good Friday) at 10am. Not sure if has to collect or it gets delivered.
Seeing him later in the day so I'll hopefully get the full story!

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Turns out it was "just" an airlock and that this is quite normal/common after replacing the rack/fluid. Hmmm.....
Apparently it says on the invoice that the car should be brought back after about 3 weeks to bleed any air from the system.
On the invoice!
I was with him when he collected it after the initial repair and no-one said anything about this or pointed to the comment.

And anyway, why is this necessary and why would it fail totally? Surely, like brake bleeding, there's a procedure to follow that should ensure the hydraulic fluid is bubble-free?

Probably depends entirely on how long they spend going lockstop-to-lockstop and driving it about to remove air from the system. When the fitters are 'encouraged' to get a car out of the workshop ASAP it makes sense (to them!) to do the minimum. get the owner to do the donkey-work and then finish the job when it comes back....

They should be able to fill a power steering system like a brake system, using vacuum.
I mean, they're not going to give you your car back after a master cylinder or ABS actuator replacement and say "here you go mate. Drive it round for a couple of weeks, and don't forget to pump that middle pedal a few times eh. When you come back we'll get rid of any air left in the system. Any failures, come and see us"!

Unless Audi power steering systems have fundamentally changed since 2005, they are self-bleeding simply by using it. I'll be re-filling the system on Neil's 3.7 in about an hour after a rack swap yesterday and all it needs is to swing the steering from side to side 3-4 times and it will purge any air out on its own. Conceivably it could require a top-up in after driving it home, but there's nothing to do after that.
