The D2 chip is the glass one and can't be moved to another key as it is epoxied in place. Coding a new key from scratch requires the immobiliser pin which is non-trivial to get. Audi just plug it in to the mothership and it happens automagically, but aftermarket tools are available to extract it. VCDS can't code it without the pin.

I can't remember the company name of Neil's locksmith either, but he did keys for a few of us at the 2018 meet.

Just use the old key with immo chip, it should still be working and starting car, I assume it's just remote not locking/unlocking doors and get a new remote: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-AUDI-4...da28%7Ciid%3A1

Unless you already have it on scratch-off tag, which I actually do for my S8!
It looks like this (image courtesy of Ross-Tech):

So is the immobiliser chip in the key section, so you can just replace the remote locking part? Dead simple if it is.

Coding in a new remote is very simple, all described in the Ross-Tech wiki. Though there's a finite number (5 maybe?) so you can run out.
I think I did it when I got my current S8, erased all the remotes (requires VCDS) then just added the two I had.

Certainly looks like it.

I had my key handy so popped it apart, leaving the remote part away from the car.
Unlocked the drivers door with the blade, alarm didn't go off. Inserted key and started car. Result.
Try that, I think you probably have a cheap and simple solution as suggested by Ainars, if cleaning doesn't work.

Oh no I don't, that was for my old one, long gone and presumably dismembered at Prestige.

I remember having issues with an A4 back in the late 90s... when they weren't epoxied in place. Had washed the car at the weekend and dropped my key on the wet tarmac drive. The key literally fell apart. I picked up the 'three' pieces, two plastic sides and button battery and put it back together again.

Monday morning came and wife drove car to her work using her key. She went into work and I set about driving to mine, except the car kept dying out after starting. Tried it about a dozen times and then phoned Audi, as the car had got this far. He suggested the key might be faulty and to try another one. Got wife's key and got to work. Called into Audi later on to check key and have it coded again, only to find that the transponder was missing from inside!

I had the opposite issue in my Murple. The monkey who fitted the alarm and remote-start tried getting the transponder out of one key and destroyed it in the process, so then cut up the other key and taped it to the reader coil so the remote-start worked When I removed the remote-start I was left with an intact key with no transponder, and a chopped up key with transponder so I have zero usable complete keys

I feel a call to Craig the locksmith in my future...

For D2 there are 3 different immos. PF has separate box 2 versions white and black box, Tacho will only do earlier box, I think it was the white box . There are some other tools for about £100 , the name escapes me now, that will do later separate box immo.

FL D2 has immo built in instrument cluster, as far as I know there are no cheap tools available that will do it offline, you are looking at either £1000 tool or need VAG PC or ODIS with online and GEKO access. You can buy GEKO access on aliexpress for single use or for a day if you have VAG PC or ODIS.
