Where does the O-ring go? I didn’t come across one when I took the antenna out.

It looks like it just sits underneath the grommet, next to the body work.

Thanks Sean. I’m sure there wasn’t one there when I took the grommet off. Instead, the grommet was partially split so that it fit either side of the bodywork to make the seal

Looked up the O-ring to see what it looked like i.e. to see if it was split as you mention, but even the one on the Audi Tradition site is just a normal looking O-ring. Also checked the size and it's listed as being 11x2.5mm. Going by the dimensions, I'd say the previous image I posted is possibly misleading, as it shows the O-ring being the same size as the grommet, whereas it might be just big enough to fit the hole in the bodywork. Not sure if that helps or not.

Hi Sean. I wonder if the design changed at some point? In the attached image, you can see the split/groove between the 2 halves of the grommet and, when installed this groove fits so that each half of the grommet are on either side of the rear wing panel. It’s a very tight fit and there’s no room for an o-ring

Could well be, and I didn't notice that in the one I linked to... or more like never double checked!

Bit of a side issue. I think that the important thing, grommet or not, is isolating metals in the arieal from the aluminium bodywork of the car so as to avoid galvanic corrosion.
And then I wonder why some D2's had external arials and some did not.
