There are two separate pumps, so a failed pump is an option. Another option could be completely blocked nozzles, due to a build up of grime. If it's leaking pipework, chances are you'd see a puddle of water under the front bumper when you try washing the headlights.

Highly unlikely, and in terms of physical access to the pumps to test them, that means removing the rear part of the driver side wheel arch, and you could try putting 12v across them.

Thanks for the help. I'm thinking the problem might be cracked pipework as there was a bit of a puddle under the nearside bumper I've since discovered. I'm struggling to find a diagram of the pipework routing so looks like I'll just have to get in there and have a proper look.

Just to follow up on this...car is off the road. I 've had nowhere to work on it this last year or so (with all my tools in storage), so was waiting for my mechanic to come back from his holidays. I had previously parked nose-in too close to a kerb some time ago, so as you can see in the photo below - the bumper cover getting disturbed has probably dislodged a water hose connection.
Things have now ended up that I'm going to have to try and fix it myself, so hoped someone could tell me before I go through the hassle of extricating my tools out of the storage unit, if the headlight washer hoses can be accessed without removal of the bumper cover? ![]()

As for getting to them, I would say the 'easiest' option is to take the bumper off. Getting at the pipes either side of the main grille may be doable, but problematic, as the wires and pipes are all clipped into place, and I reckon getting at them behind the main grille would incur some swearing. Considering the bottom of the bumper extends quite a bit, you'll be reaching in about 6-8 just to reach them.
