Thanks Sean, I'd forgotten about the clamping bolt on the plastic trim - not obvious from the drivers seat.
Job for another day though when the weather is kinder. Edit: That PDF reminded me there was a little captive retaining "plug" under the leather handgrip.  So I just went outside, levered that out with a small screwdriver, slid off the handgrip and lifted off the plastic trim - it didn't need "unclamping". The magnet is still in place (and they don't normally wear out...) and the switch below seems to be in place too. So I can only assume that either the reed switch has failed or some wiring has come loose. Alternatively the lamp in the cluster has failed, though I definitely saw it on earlier today. I'll test it another time and decide what to do. First world problem.....

Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
