The bloke plainly wasn't into your car judging from his opening comments. I sold a 1996 4.2 for 2000 quid, cash, earlier this year. I still know guys in the car trade and at least up here in Scotland the market is much firmer than you might expect. I hope you told him to blow his price out his arse!
