There was no history of it ever having been fixed and dave@a8parts seemed to think it was the original box looking at the outside of it....that's not to say it was never refurbed though. Can i ask why you went down the exchange route in the end? Would it be rude to ask for the costs?...i ask as my preference would also go out to a ZF exchange but wouldn't mind knowing how much to start saving for  Hope it's all sorted for you before the big meet mate! Quick update for everyone -
The VAG exchange gearbox arrived last week (see pics) in an exchange crate and comes complete with, well, everything - TCU, new torque converter, transfer box, the lot - so the old box was dropped out on Friday and this one put in and just some finishing bits to do Monday and all should be good for test by Tuesday!

Its back!!
Well I picked her up this evening complete with new Exchange Tiptronic Gearbox, new MAF sensor and a fresh MOT (it was due in a couple of weeks anyway) and have to admit going for a long and vigorous test drive !!!
