Did you happen to get a larger pic of the whole back of the airbag, and also the connector?

Audi's response is symptomatic of them actively wanting to kill off older models. They hate the classic and vintage cars being in the hands of enthusiasts like us and would much rather they be hidden away in a basement in Ingolstadt where no one can enjoy them.

Default Looks like no. Most of the back. But not of the connector...

I didn't think to capture the connector....
If i disconnected the airbag then I would have to clear a code, no?

I have a cheap ebay cable and vwtool but am reluctant to disconnect in case I get an airbag light in the cluster which I am unable to extinguish... If you could reassure or guide me then I could be persuaded to disconnect the airbag connector from the steering wheel.

Did you want a view of the connector unconnected? Showing the pins?

I will go down fighting on this one. This car should be enjoyed and not mothballed or destroyed!

Now that is the right way to conduct a business. Imagine the cost involved in the storage of 12,000 cars (should everyone opt for it), and for as long as it takes to remedy.

Thanks. That looks to be a slightly different construction to UK bags - we usually have a connector on the airbag itself, although the yellow plug which goes to the clock spring is the same, as is the attachment to the steering column.

I will have a look at the various steering wheels and airbags I have on the shelf and see what I can find

That is what I have noticed as I have been scouring the web for a solution to my quandry. A lot of the airbags that I have been able to see pictures of look like this:
...whereas mine simply has the brown and blue wires attached somehow without a connector.

If the yellow connector to the clock spring is the same then I am guessing that it should work?

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Do you know whether the post facelift steering wheels can be fitted to the pre facelift vehicles such as mine?

For those who don't know, John Cadogan is a Mechanical Engineer and Motoring Journalist who has been the Editor of Wheels Magazine and had various other media motoring gigs. These days he is a consumer advocate who operates his soap box via YouTube and also runs a website which handles new car sales negotiations on behalf of buyers to try and get the best possible price.

Anyway his reply to me was:
"Martin,
I'm not a lawer but I don't see how they can compel you to sell. Fixing it is their responsibility, I would have thought.
JC"
That was sent to me the same day the video went up, so I can't claim responsibility for that!

I got a letter from Audi on Friday advising of an urgent recall on the airbag. Not unexpected. They must have got my details from the registration regulatory authority here in NSW, the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).

I am off for a drive tomorrow to the only wreckers within Kooee of here that might be likely to have a salvageable steering wheel / airbag. My registration is due on the 27th January. I have been scouring the internet for a local source but so far have only managed to find candidates that are compromised in the same way as my vehicle.

So, I am looking for an A4 - 2001, or an A6 - 2001 to 2003. Are there any other vehicles that would suit? TT? A8 with a tiptronic wheel? I can fit a 4 spoke A8 wheel post 2001 I am assuming?

Thanks for all of the advice kind people!

Paul
