Unhappy Unhappy end to my holiday

Anyone care to guess what stopped me dead on the M6 last night?

There's a slight clue in one of the photos, and another in the words of this song, for those old enough to remember it:

"Higgity, haggity hoggety, high. Pioneers, they never say die..."

More later

Missing centre cap on one of the wheels - something hub related?

Bummer in any case

Three wheels on my wagon......
Did the hub fail or a wheel bolt snap or similar?

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Pretty close indeed. I'll find time to type the full story later, but losing your rear wheel at around 85mph (oops, I mean kph of course) and watching it belt down the motorway on its own isn't funny! And I can vouch for the '8s legendary handling being not so good on 3 wheels!

But the car appears largely OK (n/s rear discs are b***ered, wheel needs a refurb and I might need a new hub), and so are we. I managed to get the car safely to the hard shoulder, found the wheel and got it back in place securely enough to drive it onto the recovery truck and off at this end.

It'll be off the road for a few days, but that's all.

Jesus, better the pucker mark on the seats gonna take some rubbing out,

I had it happen many years ago on my works van on the rear an my fiesta front so I know how scary it can be.

You did well to keep her under control at that speed.

Hope you get her sorted soon

Glad to see you are all ok Jim. I know from experiencing that feedback from the rear wheels on these beasts is very limited in straight lines. I had a puncture at at 65 the rear tyre side wall failed and the tyre detached. It was the first indication anything was wrong! wobbled to the side of the road and did a change. Tyre was returned to manufacture who estimated I had been driving on it flat for about 20 miles!!!!
